The One Estate Coffee Story: Our Journey to Exceptional Single Estate Coffee

In a world of blends and mass production, we chose a different path. Welcome to One Estate Coffee, where we believe that exceptional coffee tells the story of a single place, a single farmer, and a singular passion for quality.

The Spark That Started It All

My journey into the world of single estate coffee began with that first conversation with a coffee farmer in Bangalore, India. I accidentally met this farmer when having breakfast next to him and overheard a conversation about specialty coffee. This farmer had owned a small farm lot which we would call microlot in the specialty world, where he was growing high quality coffee with passion and great care using various educated techniques as well as maintaining the highest measure of sustainability, but also paying his workers fair wage and determined to progress year over year to ensure better output every year.

He explained about his small intricacies and the value of single farmer's coffee that is the essence of a coffee lover's passion. It was only until a few years later the idea grew to really establish the one estate meaning of specialty coffee when I met a small batch roaster in Laos. He truly admired the work of microlot farmers and specialty coffee. He valued roasting small batches over large commercial batches and would take part in various competitions as well as working together with farmers to encourage the value of microlot specialty coffee.

This helped me to understand that specialty coffee from single estate not only should be about the farmer but also the roaster who adds his roasting technique to add the finishing touch. This was the birth of One Estate.

What Makes Single Estate Coffee Special?

Unlike blends that combine beans from various sources, single estate coffee comes from one specific farm or plantation. This exclusivity allows the unique characteristics of the growing environment – what the wine world calls "terroir" – to shine through in every cup.

When you drink our coffee, you're tasting:

  • The specific altitude where the coffee was grown

  • The distinct soil composition of that single farm

  • The microclimate that nurtured those particular plants

  • The careful processing methods chosen by that individual farmer

  • The meticulous roasting profile developed specifically for those beans

The result is coffee with character, depth, and a sense of place that simply can't be replicated in blends.

Our Simple Philosophy

At One Estate Coffee, our approach is refreshingly straightforward:

  1. One Farm: We work directly with individual microlot farms, building relationships that ensure fair practices and exceptional quality.

  2. One Roaster: Our small batch master roaster develops a custom profile for each estate's beans, highlighting their natural characteristics rather than masking them with excessive roasting.

  3. One Exceptional Experience: From farm to cup, every step in our process is designed to deliver the purest expression of what makes each estate unique.

A Commitment to Transparency

In an industry often shrouded in obscurity, we believe in complete transparency. When you purchase our coffee, you're not just buying beans – you're connecting with a specific place and the people who tend it.

Each of our coffee offerings comes with the story of its origin: the farmer's name, the estate's location and altitude, the varieties grown, and the processing method used. We want you to know exactly where your coffee comes from and the journey it took to reach your cup.

Sustainability Beyond Buzzwords

For us, sustainability isn't just a marketing term – it's a fundamental aspect of producing truly exceptional coffee, just as the Indian farmer taught me years ago. We partner exclusively with farms that demonstrate:

  • Environmentally responsible growing practices

  • Fair treatment and compensation of workers

  • Long-term approaches to land management

  • Water conservation and protection

  • Commitment to continuous improvement in quality

These practices not only ensure the ethical production of our coffee but also contribute to better flavor in the cup. Coffee grown with care simply tastes better.

The Estates: A Preview

Currently, we source our beans from two remarkable estates in two different countries, each with its own distinct character and story. These microlot farms represent the perfect balance of traditional knowledge and innovative techniques, creating coffees that are truly unique expressions of their terroir.

In the coming weeks, we'll introduce you to these exceptional partners in detail, sharing their unique approaches to coffee cultivation and the distinct flavor profiles they produce.
